The two USB-C sockets on the Anker 332 A8355 have different jobs. PD-IN accepts power for the connected laptop; the USB-C data socket connects data accessories. Neither USB-C socket provides video output. Matching the plug shape is only the first step.

A quick port map

Anker’s A8355 support guidance distinguishes the charging input from the data connection. Its product specifications list one 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A data ports, HDMI and a PD input. The attached cable connects the hub to the host. Data speed labels are interface specifications, not measured transfer results.

Where should an external drive go?

Use the USB-C data port for a compatible USB-C drive, rather than the PD-IN socket. Before assuming the hub is faulty, check whether the same drive and cable work directly with your laptop. Anker recommends that direct-connection check when troubleshooting data transfer.

For important files, keep a separate backup and use your operating system’s safe-eject process before disconnecting storage. A hub adds connection points; it does not replace a backup plan. We have not tested the power needs of particular drives through this model.

Where should the charger go?

Connect the appropriate Power Delivery charger to PD-IN, not the data socket. Anker states that a 100W-capable PD charger and cable can provide up to 85W to the laptop, with 15W allocated to the hub. Actual suitability still depends on the laptop and charging equipment.

Why a USB-C monitor will not work there

Anker explicitly says neither USB-C socket is designed for video output. If your display requires video over USB-C, this hub does not supply that connection through those sockets. Check the intended monitor path before buying another cable. Our separate monitor guide covers the hub’s HDMI route.

Pros and practical limitations

Separating power input and data makes the hub useful for a straightforward laptop accessory setup. The trade-off is that you cannot treat either USB-C socket as a universal port. It also means a USB-C-only monitor or an accessory requiring a different power arrangement may need another solution.

Draw your planned setup before ordering: laptop, charger, monitor and each accessory. Label the connection each one requires. If that map demands a function the hub does not provide, a different model is more relevant than an extra adapter bought on guesswork.

Buying checks for US shoppers

Match Anker 332, A8355, black and the five-port configuration. Similar product names can hide different layouts. Check seller, condition, included items, host compatibility and return terms. Verify your cables’ data and charging capabilities against the jobs you intend them to do.
